Whether you decide to take a walking tour, a day tour, or a night tour called "Rumba en Chiva" you will enjoy the historic and modern city of CARTAGENA Over the years Cartagena has changed to turn into one of the most popular destinations to visit either for leisure or business. The newer and modern areas of El Laguito (where the apartment is located) Bocagrande, the restaurants, bars and clubs are there to cater the visitors. The Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj) The Clock Tower is the main entrance to the old city, and it represents Cartagena's symbol. It was built at the beginning of XVIII Century, but it was completed in the 19th Century. It was known as the main gate to enter the Walled City, and it was called the Bridge Gate. The four sided clock tower was added in 1888 as it stands today. In front of the tower there is a statue of the city founder, Pedro de Heredia. La Popa Convent Being the highest hill in the city (150 meters.) it was chosen as the place to build the Barefooted Augustinian Priest's Convent in 1607. This hill was originally named "The Stern of the Galley" due to its similarity to this part of the vessels, but turned up side down. In 1607, after the independence was used as a military area. Located just 1Km, and it is now one of the areas most visited in the city. The Walls of Cartagena (La Ciudad Amurallada) One of the most impressive City Walls in the world, and definitely one of the best places to enjoy the sunset. The Walls started to get built at the end of the XVI Century, right after the attack of Francis Drake. They were complete on 1726 just two centuries after the construction had been started, and 25 years before the "Independence of Colombia". San Felipe de Barajas Fortress This is a "must see!" It is the utmost military engineering construction built by the Spanish Crown in America. It was originally built between 1639 and 1657. It was given the name of "Bonete" in 1656 when the first stage was complete and the triangular structure appeared as the highest point. In 1741 after Vernon's assault, the collateral batteries were built under the direction of Engineer Antonio de Arevalos, The result was an a real high and inexorable fortress where you can observe a spectacular view of the old and the modern city of Cartagena. Santo Domingo Plaza Located in the center of the old city across from Santo Domingo Church and is set among elegant colonial houses where many of the famous restaurants are located. This square has become the perfect place for a "get together", a dinner, or just to relax, entertain or have a traditional drink such as "limonada de coco" (coconut lemonade).The plaza was decorated with the sculpture Mujer Reclinada ("Reclining Woman"), a gift from the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Plaza de Los Coches (Carriage Plaza) Located across the Tower of the Clock and it is surrounded by beautiful colonial houses amongst the exciting night life. In this square you will find all kind of discotheques with all kind of music, such as Salsa rhythms, Techno, rock etc... |
